Delegation to Judo
World Championships in Osaka Announced
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (September 5, 2003) - USA Judo has announced the
delegation that will represent the USA in the 2003 World Judo Championships in
Osaka, Japan, September 11-14. A top-6 finish in any weight category at the
World Championships earns a country an automatic invitation to the 2004
Olympic Games for that weight. All other countries must qualify each weight
category through their Continental Union, each of which has been given a
participation quota for the Games. In Pan America, the quota for each weight
category is the top 6 ranked countries for men and the top 3 ranked countries
for women. Currently, the USA is ranked in the top 6 for all men's weights
and in the top 3 for three of the seven women's weights (52, 57, and 70 kg).
Additional Pan American Olympic qualifying points can be earned for a top-8
finish at the worlds and at next year's Pan American Judo Union Championships
in April.
Once a weight class is qualified for the Games, the actual athlete to
represent the USA in the Olympics will be determined by an Olympic Trials on
the first weekend in June, 2004 at a location yet to be determined. The top
5 nationally ranked athletes at the close of the national championships on May
1 in San Diego will compete in the trials. An exception is that any US
athlete who places in the top 3 at next week's World Championship will
automatically be the Olympic team member unless another athlete, or athletes,
place in the top 3 at one of the three A+ level tournaments in Europe this
coming winter (Moscow, Paris, and Germany.) In that case the World Medalist
and A+ event medalists will compete in the trials for the Olympic Team spot.
The Olympic Games will take place August 13-29, 2004 with the Judo
competition taking place August 14-20.
Schedule of Competition for the World Championships in Osaka:
September 11: Women +78 kg and 78 kg; Men +100 and 100 kg

Subject: INSURANCE, MY FAVORITE TOPIC!
I am please to report to the COMMUNITY that the USJA has concluded negotiations for it’s General Liability Policy and it’s Accident Policy for the effective period of 9/1/03 to 8/30/04 well before the 9/1/03 deadline (-:.
The Accident Policy has been hand delivered to the USA JUDO office in Colorado Springs. The General Liability Policy Certificate of Insurance has also been received by Mr. Bill Rosenberg, Executive Director, USA JUDO.
The USJA also has a policy which covers its Directors and Officers which is effective for the same period.
I would like to publicly recognize Mr. Dana Rucker, Mr. Jesse Jones and Ms. Katrina Davis for their hard work and dedicated effort in getting this accomplished.
It took a great deal of work and a coordinated effort.
So, please feel free to PLAY JUDO!

NEWS RELEASE ANNOUNCING
THE AWARD:
Dan Smith receives Medal
In an award ceremony on 14 Jun 03 Dan Smith was presented the Bronze Star with V
device for valor for actions in Afghanistan on 27 Nov 02. The award was
presented to SFC Smith by Lt. Colonel Duff who was wounded in the same action.
Narrative comments by LTC Duff follow:
On 27 Nov 02 SFC Dan Smith was leading a convoy through the mountainous and
hazardous regions of eastern Afghanistan. While passing through a particularly
dangerous section the convoy was ambushed by enemy forces emplaced on the high
ground to the left of the convoy. SFC Smith’s lead vehicle took heavy fire,
wounding personnel. SFC Smith directed his vehicle to a covered position while
he himself left the vehicle to reenter the kill zone and engage the enemy.
While the rest of the convoy was split and pinned by enemy fire SFC Smith
bravely entered the kill zone and began to engage the enemy with rapid effective
fire, inflicting causalities on the emplaced enemy forces. Enemy personnel were
forced to seek cover and return fire on SFC Smith. After enemy fire was
redirected to his position SFC Smith was able to signal remaining US personnel
to cross the danger area and regroup with his vehicle. After expending all his
ammunition SFC Smith joined the rest of the element and reorganized the element
for a rapid departure. SFC Smith then lead the convoy to a safe area which he
secured for a medavac. After SFC Smith organized a successful medavac for the
wounded he then lead the convoy out of the mountains and to safety.
SFC Dan Smith’s actions on 27 Nov 02 demonstrated great courage under fire.
Instead of seeking cover he fearlessly returned to the kill zone to aggressively
engage the enemy and provide covering fire for his fellow soldier. By
inflicting causalities on the enemy and drawing all fire to his location he
enabled the rest of US forces to safely cross the danger area and regroup for a
safe withdrawal from the area. His selfless actions no doubt saved the lives of
US personnel. Sergeant First Class Smith’s leadership, dedication to duty,
selfless service, and commitment to mission accomplishment under the most
extreme of circumstances greatly contributed to the success of Operation
Enduring Freedom. His technical and tactical proficiency and performance of
duty in a combat zone reflect great credit upon himself, U S Army Special
Forces, the Combined/Joint Task Force-180, and the United Stated Central
Command.
