Subject: Pan Am Team arrives in Dominican Republic

COLORADO SPRINGS (August 6, 2003) -The USA Judo delegation arrived in the Dominican Republic today in preparation for the Pan American Games Judo competition which will take place Saturday through Tuesday, August 9-12.  The team roster is given at the end of this release.

The Pan Am Games are critical to Olympic qualifying for the USA in Judo.  These Games are the second to last qualifying event in the Pan American Judo Union (PJU) and are given double the weight of the other qualifying events.  The qualifying events are:

2002 Pan American Judo Union Championships - Nov, 2002 - COMPLETED
2003 North American Zone Qualifying event - May, 2003 - COMPLETED
2003 Pan American Judo Union Championships - June, 2003 - COMPLETED
2003 Pan American Games - August, 2003
2004 Pan American Judo Union Championships - April, 2004 (Tentative)

For each weight class, the top 6 countries for men and top 3 countries for women, among all Pan American countries will qualify for the Olympics.  Countries can also qualify a weight class directly by placing in the top 5 in the World Championship in Osaka, Japan in September, but most will need to qualify through Pan American qualifying system.

In the USA, once a weight class is qualified, the individual athlete to represent the USA in Athens will be chosen in an Olympic Trials that will take place in May or June of 2004.  Thus, different athletes can earn qualifying points in the same weight class in different events.  For example, at men's 73 Kg, the USA is ranked #1 in Pan America.  Chuck Jefferson (San Jose, Calif.) won the 2002 Pan American Judo Union Championships, but was injured last spring.  Jimmy Pedro (Lawrence, Mass.) stepped in and replaced him in the North American Zone Championship in May and won that event.  Chuck has since recovered and won the 2003 PJU Judo Championships in June and will represent the USA in the Pan Am Games. Similarly, Rick Hawn (Colo. Springs) and Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Illinois) have both earned Olympic qualifying points for 81 kg and John Serbin (San Jose, Calif.) and Martin Boonzaayer (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) have done the same for +100 kg.

Editorial Comment:

As the summer winds down, just one major Junior event is coming up, USA Judo’s Junior Open in Boca Raton.  As you know, Florida Judo hosted the USJF Nationals last week and it was very successfully attended and run.  This weeks event should prove equally successful.  Two Junior camps were being held this past week:  USA Judo Junior camp and Daihaigen Yudanshakai’s Junior camp.  This may seem conflicting however it was not as they were scheduled at different times of the day.

Next year, the junior events will be held in some exotic places:

July 3-4, 2004             USJF Junior Nationls            Honolulu, HI

July 10-11, 2004         USJA Junior Nationals          Chicago, IL (ok maybe not that exotic – but it will be a nice event)

July 23-24, 2004         USJI Junior Olympics            Boca Raton, FL

July 30-Aug 1, 2004   USJI Junior Open                  Boca Raton FL

With the summer season fast closing, the Senior circuit will again gain prominence with the US Senior Open Championships again being held in Las Vegas in October.  The Riviera Hotel will be the host hotel and event site.  See you there.

Just a reminder, I will be returning from the Junior Open on Monday night, be in the office on Tuesday and leave again for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for the Pan American Olympics Games.  I will probably not be able to post the winners or report on the Junior Open until after I get back on August 13th.  If you are interested in the results, please go to the USJI website at www.usjudo.org for complete results.

OLES achieves PJU referee status.  Many of you know Susan Oles from Pennsylvania.  She went to Guatemala this past weekend and passed her PJU Referee examination.  Congratulations, Susan – a job well done.

Editorial Comment:

Tournament directors are rare breeds of leaders who have the ability to organize, lead, cajole, work, take abuse, while still keeping a sense of humor and a sense of duty to the sport we all love.  Lowell Slaven and his merry band of workers will soon be out of the tournament business, at least on a national level and though we know others will take up the banner, it would be a shame to note the passing of the guard without some bit of reminiscence.

I really don't know how many tournaments Lowell has done, but in the last 5 years or so, he has done many:  High School Nationals, Collegiate Nationals, Senior Nationals, Junior Nationals, Junior Olympics.  He has done many in Indiana, but has ventured to Las Vegas, Louisville, Albuquerque as well as Indianapolis to run events.  His team includes a score of folks from all over the country but also includes a core of locals who rightly should be mentioned:  the Branson family(Jim, Donna, John, Dawn, Arthur and Judy), Jim and Hannah Starcher, Dick and Joyce Edwards, Jim Carmer, Ed Wojdyla, Virgil Bowles, Ann Hazelgrove, Tom Tucker, Danielle Ruddick, Rick Hay and others who though not mentioned deserve equal billing.  These and others on a National level have made these events the success they have been over these many years.

To be honest, it is not a stretch to be tournament director once a year.  But to do it 4-5 times a year is monumental.  These folks deserve our gratitude and undying thanks for a job well done.  I personally have seen Lowell set up mats, wash floors, get peppered with insults from the likes of folks who really do not know what running a tournament means.  It is an endless and thankless job.

I never thought I would say this because I have had my differences with this man.  Lowell can be picky, fiesty, prickly, profound and profane.  He can be marine tough or gentle as a lamb, he can be outspoken or be contemplative and reflective.  But under it all, Lowell really does love Judo, he does the job with focused principles that is rarely broken, he has mellowed, sort of and there is more than a modicum of respect he has earned for what he has done for Judo – especially from me.

So after the Fall Classic/Ladders in September, Lowell and company will have finished their tenure as tournament organizers at least for the time being.  As I left the venue in Albuquerque last week, I told Lowell that I will truly miss him - and I truly will.  Thanks Lowell, you did a great job and we will miss you.

Other news:  George Uchida, one of the patriarchs of US Judo and an IJF A referee, recently was in the hospital for liver dysfunction.  He is at home now but continues to be monitored closely.  For all his friends in Illinois an the Midwest, we wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

To folks looking to make announcements in this newsletter, I am making the following request:  all postings are to sent to me at knarimatsu@microlamps.com in electronic format.  Tournament flyers, clinic announcements and the like are included in this request.  If you have any questions as to exactly what format to send it in, it should be in any of the following formats:
                Word

                Excel

                Adobe Acrobat - .pdf

                Power point

If I receive hard copy flyers, these may or may not sent as attachments to these emails.  If you have any questions, please contact me at 1-630-207-0822(cell).   Thanks for your cooperation.

There are currently only 25 Life Members in Illinois.  You can start a membership for $75 minimum start payment and $25 per payment thereafter until completed.  You can pay by cash, check or credit card. There are only 360 paid up life members.  It would be nice to have 1000 paid up life members by April of 2004!  Let’s do our share in Illinois.   Thanks.

NEWS RELEASE ANNOUNCING THE AWARD:

Dan Smith receives Medal

In an award ceremony on 14 Jun 03 Dan Smith was presented the Bronze Star with V device for valor for actions in Afghanistan on 27 Nov 02.  The award was presented to SFC Smith by Lt. Colonel Duff who was wounded in the same action.  Narrative comments by LTC Duff follow:

On 27 Nov 02 SFC Dan Smith was leading a convoy through the mountainous and hazardous regions of eastern Afghanistan.   While passing through a particularly dangerous section the convoy was ambushed by enemy forces emplaced on the high ground to the left of the convoy.  SFC Smith’s lead vehicle took heavy fire, wounding personnel.  SFC Smith directed his vehicle to a covered position while he himself left the vehicle to reenter the kill zone and engage the enemy.  While the rest of the convoy was split and pinned by enemy fire SFC Smith bravely entered the kill zone and began to engage the enemy with rapid effective fire, inflicting causalities on the emplaced enemy forces.  Enemy personnel were forced to seek cover and return fire on SFC Smith.  After enemy fire was redirected to his position SFC Smith was able to signal remaining US personnel to cross the danger area and regroup with his vehicle.  After expending all his ammunition SFC Smith joined the rest of the element and reorganized the element for a rapid departure.  SFC Smith then lead the convoy to a safe area which he secured for a medavac.  After SFC Smith organized a successful medavac for the wounded he then lead the convoy out of the mountains and to safety.

SFC   Dan Smith’s actions on 27 Nov 02 demonstrated great courage under fire.  Instead of seeking cover he fearlessly returned to the kill zone to aggressively engage the enemy and provide covering fire for his fellow soldier.  By inflicting causalities on the enemy and drawing all fire to his location he enabled the rest of US forces to safely cross the danger area and regroup for a safe withdrawal from the area.  His selfless actions no doubt saved the lives of US personnel.  Sergeant First Class Smith’s leadership, dedication to duty, selfless service, and commitment to mission accomplishment under the most extreme of circumstances greatly contributed to the success of Operation Enduring Freedom.  His technical and tactical proficiency and performance of duty in a combat zone reflect great credit upon himself, U S Army Special Forces, the Combined/Joint Task Force-180, and the United Stated Central Command.
