Jim:

I was looking through the obituaries at Fort Wayne.com and found this one for Vicki Lilja.  I believe that she was at the reunion last year.

Is it too early to even think about one for 2010?  Maybe Greg and others who live in the area can work on it.

Ericksen, Vickie Jo

Subject: Homestead

Hi Jim,

This is really a great thing you have going here.  I attended Homestead through my Junior year and then my family moved to Michigan.  My brother Dave graduated from Homestead in 1974.

I have been married for almost 24 years.  We have 2 daughters (19 & 21), both attending the University of Texas at Arlington.  I have worked for Verizon (formerly GTE) for 24 years.  Most of that time in Dallas/Ft Worth, but we recently transferred to Pennsylvania.

For those of you that knew my brother, he passed away 7 years ago from aneurism in his aorta.  It was very sudden and quite a shock to us. He was 41 at the time.

I have such great memories of Homestead, I am really looking forward to seeing everyone!

Mom called this AM and I learned of Dave Rogers death.  Dave was a good friend in grade school and Jr/Sr High and at Purdue...  I've wonderful memories of Dave.  He will be missed.

Hi Jim,

What a surprise, thank you for getting the Reunion together.  We are looking forward to coming.  I have really enjoyed getting caught up on what everyone is doing and was sad to hear about Roberta Summers and Bob Gibson. Phil (Keipper) and I have been married for 24 years (in May) and have 2 sons.  Matt (19) is a Freshman at San Diego State University and David (16) is a Sophomore in High School.  We moved to Southern California (Thousand Oaks) in 1998 after living in Atlanta for 17 years.  Phil has been working for Hilton for 20 years as an Architect and was transferred to the Corporate Headquarters in Beverly Hills, hence, the move West!  We have fallen in love with California, in spite of the Fires, Earthquakes and Mud slides.  The fires last October were about 2 miles from us.  Lots of smoke and ash, but no flames to deal with.  I continue to volunteer and play a little Tennis.

Sadly, my Mom passed away in December of 2000 and Phil's Dad passed away just last December (2003).  They are greatly missed.

Good to hear from you,

Lori (Moppert) Keipper

Roberta Summers Death -

Its a long story. I'll try and make it short.

She was having lots of back pain for a long time maybe a year. Went to lots of doctors. They didn't know what was going on. I  believe she went to a chiropractor to get some relief of the pain. He felt something was wrong and he had a MRI and found out she had bone cancer. She went through treatments for maybe 8 months or so. Carla L, now Gallucci told me about the cancer. I called her that week. She was the same old Roberta. Very positive happy, easy going, but in a lot of pain. She was sure she could beat the cancer. About 6 month later I was sitting in church and they where saying prayers for sick people and Roberta's name came to me in my prayers. That afternoon I got a call from Shawn Blue, a close friend of Jeff Summers, that Roberta had passed away that morning. I talked to Jeff Summers the next day and to her older sister. She was living north of Chicago at the time She has two children I believe. One of the children is fairly young.
I'm not sure of the accuracy of all this info. and dates.  I think She past away last spring.
We never talked on a regular basis but we where good friend. We had  lot of fun and memorable times.
She will truly be missed and always in my memories.

Jim:

OK here it is...

Fall 1975 left Fort Wayne after some summer job...  Probably Harris Boat, working night shift... Fall 1975 went to Purdue Univ, West Laf.  My major was "undecided" for 2.5 years then I chose Architectural Engineering Major...  Started in the Co-op program and spent 4 semesters in S.Cal and one in Ann Arbor, MI...  Stayed closer to home cause I met a girl...  Worked for Bechtel Power Corp...

Married that girl (Jane) one week after graduation in 1980 and moved to Orange County, CA... El Toro then Mission Viejo for 4 years.  Worked for Fluor Engineers until August 1984.  I quit work to go back to School (Purdue) after having first child. Amanda in 1984.   Went back to MSCE Construction Engineering Management Program w/ Don Hancher.  TA for Dr. Havers...

Got MSCE in Aug 1985.  Stuck arounf campus and taught Engineering graphics to frosh. in School of Technology at Purdue for following year and took some classes...  Ran out of cash in 1986 and moved to S.Bend IN to work for Father In Law.

Had a son, Andrew in 1987 and lived happily ever after, well until the divorce in 1996/7.  Kids are great. I have two sophomores, one at Penn HS in Mishawaka, IN (boy) and other at Purdue W. Lafayette (girl).  He's a base (electric) player and she is an Art Ed. major.  (Yes, at Purdue!)

Have 2 partners in the x-father-in-law's company.  We purchased it in 1997...  Company is called C P Industries.  We make things for people who make things for cars...  Auto glass gages and fixtures and auto seat molds and models and we make machined castings for Caterpillar Inc service parts division....

I didn't do a whole lot (hobies/ etc.) except work and kids - '86 thru '96...  Got fat and lazy... In 1995 hit 200 pounds and I guess I decided to get up off my arse and do something...

My Godson and his parents moved to a small town in Wisconsin and we got a note that said Alex had started Judo at the YMCA...  The rest as they say is history...  I started up with Judo again with Charlie Hooks at Notre Dame U. (had played club sports at Purdue '75 - '80).  In '95 and never hurt so much before or since...  Judo is like wrestling with a heavy cotton top (Gi) and cotton trousers tied with a long cotton belt (Obi).  You triy to throw the opponent mostly on their back with speed and force.  Baring this happening you can try to pin them mostly on their back for 25 seconds or try to choke them or arm bar them into submission.  Judo has been an Olympic Sport since 1964. Charlie Hooks is 6 or 7 degree Black Belt and my best friend. (excluding girls of course)

Jigoro Kano, the guy who started Judo in 1882, also set up the belt rank system used by most...  Judo's has 6 grades below Black Belt (white, yellow, green, (3)brown) and 10 degrees of Black Belt.  I've have a second degree black.

Now I'm coaching the club team at ND and working with the YMCA programs for Charlie Hooks in Elkhart and South Bend. and am Involved in the Midwest Collegiate Judo Assn., Indiana Judo Inc., and am a USA Judo National Referee. I keep a WEB PAGE for the Judo community www.judocalendar.com  which combines all the event calendars I can find and puts the info all in one place.

I Live in Granger Indiana.  Feed my kids often as I can. Granger is basically the South Bend area.  Kids mom lives 20 minutes south of here.  I get to do Judo 4 week nights and maybe 25 to 30 weekends a year we have tournament or clinic to go to...  OK I know where does hobby become obsession?

They have Judo competitions for us older people too....  It's called Masters (anyone over 30 years old). Playing Masters I've been fortunate to place 3rd in 2003 in Las Vegas , second in 1999 Houston, and in 2002 in Cleveland won 1st in the National Masters Competition.

I started going to the World Masters Tournament events in 2001 Arizona, and have been able to play Judo in Londonderry, Northern  Ireland in 2002 and Tokyo, Japan in June 2003...  (In Japan I blew my knee, ACL and got a "doner" ligament and bone plugs in August 2003.)

Met a girl in N.Ireland in 2002, Jessica (I can call a 42 year old a girl can't I?), she does more Judo than I.  We started dating in Las Vegas 2003, she lives in Denver, CO.   We have been helping the airlines recovery cash flow since...  I did get to do a little vacationing with Jess in Japan the week after the tournament last June...  We had a great time.  Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagano (Bullet train...woo woo) ... We are planning for the Worlds in Vienna Austria this summer and do get to meet at other events and occasions throughout the year...   I came home from Tokyo with a limp and Jess came back with two gold metals and a silver!

Well that's me in a nut shell, sure wish I could get this info from more classmates... IF YOU SEND IT, I'LL POST IT!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for taking care of that nasty "e". I've been enjoying the updates on your list. SO keep them coming.  Hopefully we will be getting more.  I feel so honored that you would be willing to entrust me with your password; however,  I think I'll just stick to trying to keep mine updated. Thanks for the offer.
I would like to keep a database of everyone's address, phone #, email address, family (marital status?), kids & grandkids (yes, there are a few -- Marcia Lew just became a grandma), education and occupation. I'm thinking that I could gather all this information for
the reunion book.
Any interesting questions that I could throw out there? The 1990 reunion book had everyone respond to three memories fron HS. It also listed hobbies.

BYAM43: I'm going to figure you're busy elsewhere, so I'll yap a bit. Was back at the high school for the 1st time in 28 years last August, the day before school started.
BYAM43: The place is twice as big as when we were there. And looks like twice the money around there nowadays. New 2nd gym, new weight workout rooms above and behind the floor hockey deck above the original gym.
BYAM43: They have spent big money immortalizing the recent jocks in Plexiglas color photos down the entrance to the gym. I had to look way down the line to come across old 8x10 black and whites from our era.
BYAM43: And did I mention the new second story over the whole school? Once some vigilant staffer decided I'm a stranger, I had to trade my rent a car keys for a hall pass.
BYAM43: I'm seriously considering coming to the reunion from here in Portland, Oregon. So I'll keep up with developments. Catch you again sometime. Later

I have the UAW Hall on Layfette Center Road reserved for July 16th, 2005. I talked to Bob today, and gave him the information. We have to decide on a caterer, they furnish a bartender, and security. Our son, Matt is a senior at Butler University, in Indianapolis and is 22. He graduated from Homestead in 2000. Our triplet daughters, Melissa, Mallory and Molly, are 7th grade, at Summit, across from Homestead. I am a tool & die maker at GM in Fort Wayne. Janel just went back to work at Haverhill Elementary as a school secretary. Life is in the fast lane. As our girls play Fastpitch Softball, middle school basketball and volleyball.

Thanks for the email, and for the introduction to your website! Very clever. Nice collection of "Moon River" renditions.
Glad to hear that a date for the class reunion has been pegged! Hard to believe that it has almost been 30 years. Where did the time go?
'Tis been a crazy year for me and my family; my Mom died suddenly and without warning (heart attack) in January this year, and my Dad
thereafter sold his house and moved to Indianapolis, where he now lives in a retirement community about two miles from us. My wife Debbie's
parents retired and moved from San Francisco to join us in Indianapolis (they live in Carmel, actually), and then to top it all off, we moved
(about a mile from our current house). Although my law firm has an office in Fort Wayne, my trips to the Summit City have tapered-off since
my Dad moved in May.
Kate, our daughter, is 10 and is in Fifth Grade at St. Simon School, and our son, David, is 8 and is in Second Grade at St. Simon. Both are
anxiously awaiting Christmas and (hopefully) another visit from Santa. I hope this email finds you and your family well! Thanks again for your
message! I'll try to visit your website periodically.

P.S. You may have forgotten, but my yearbook quote is a Groucho Marx line from one of his movies (I want to say "Duck Soup"). I have more
Marxian quotes if interested . . .Go Spartans! And may you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2004!

Hi Again Jim,

I can actually do my small part to help the communication cause.  I've stayed in close contact with a dear friend who's still living in FT. Wayne (South Side High grad).  She's stayed in touch with Lori Moppert (who married Phil Keiper, another 1975 grad) and she can also track down Rob Newell.  When I get their info, I'll pass it on to you.  I'm going to contact Andy Brooks and Scooter Phillips today.  Andy and I were real good friends and I knew Scooter very well too, but I haven't talked to either since graduation.

I've only been back to Ft. Wayne four times since I left in 1979, once for my brother's wedding (who has since moved to San Jose, CA), once for my father's funeral and twice to visit my friend Sarah.  I visited Sarah in Ft. Wayne this past July 4th.  Prior to that, I hadn't been back there in 15 years.  It's very true when they say that "You can't go home again".  I have now lived in Phoenix longer (25 years) than I lived in Ft. Wayne (22 years).  To me, Ft. Wayne is a very foreign land.  I can't find my way around the city at all and everything looks very different.  I find that quite sad actually, but "that's life".

Be well,

Subject: RE: HOMESTEAD CLASS OF 1975

Hi Jim - sorry I haven't gotten around to doing this.  I need to forward
this home & see if I can find any addresses that way.  I had subscribed to
the site, but didn't find very many people I actually remembered & wanted in
my email.  I'll see if I can still get on - that way I can probably get you
anyone on the list.  The one I wanted out of the whole class was Dawn
Kissell - you might remember she and I were best friends through high
school, and now we've completely lost track of each other.  Unfortunately,
she was not on the list, so I pretty much didn't care about anyone else.
Anyway, if I can still get on, I'll let you know.  I kind of think my time
expired though.

What have you been up to?  How was your tournament?  Did you bring home any

trophies?  My daughter is competing on a forensics team at college level
right now.  She loves it, and it's so close to acting, I am hoping someone
in the audience will "discover" her.  She's brought home 3 trophies and 5
medals, out of 4 trips out, so I think she's doing pretty well.  She needs
her mom to push things though, to see if she can go farther with it.

She's taking some interim classes at Chrismtas, although she will still have

to work if she wants to keep her job here.  Did I tell you she got a job at
my law firm as a clerk?  Good money, boring job.  She wants to work until
she's sure I'm not going to need a transplant any time soon, then she'll go
to school full-time.  I think she could go now, but I understand her wanting
the money.  It's been a long time since she had a good paying job.

How is your life going otherwise?  I was off 4 months, as you know, with

fatigue - a major symptom of my liver disease.  Then one day, it was just
all better.  I will still need a transplant, and my doctor doesn't think
this will last very long, and that I'll soon be down again, but I'm going to
try to prove him wrong.  I've already cut back on my pain medication on my
own.  It makes me hurt a little more, but my mind isn't as foggy, and
sometimes that's how I'd rather have it.  (other times, I don't really care)
He wrote the prescription for 2 pills 4 times a day, and I've cut down to
three a day - pretty major cut.  I'm hoping that will help, too, with my
fatigue problem.  I get sleepy when I take the pain meds.  When the
transplant time comes and I have to be off work up until the transplant day,
I'll take as much pain medication as they'll let me, but for now, I want as
little of it as I can stand!

I've been walking a half hour in the morning before work and another

half hour after work - it probably doesn't sound like much to you, but it's
a whole lot of work to me!  And I'm really proud of myself for hanging in
there and doing it every day, because there are alot of days when I really
don't feel like doing any of it.

There are alot of people off with the flu here at the firm - is that

going around your company, too?  Do you believe in flu shots?  I've always
gotten one because they're free through the firm, but this year I missed it
because I was home sick, so I'm wondering if that means I'll have a worse
year with no medication.  I can't imagine that it makes that much
difference, although I've never had the flu when I've had the shot.

Well, Jim, I guess that's about it for today.  Take care of

yourself, and I'll try to remember to check my home email and see if I can
bring up the school list again with everyone on it.  Thanks for your
interest and for your "push" for us to get the list done!
Love,
Sue

Jim:

The best mail address for me is sevans1956@comcast.net.  Genny Geork (I forget how to spell her name) has a site and a few people responded to it. I'll forward her last email and maybe she can help.  Are you in the Fort Wayne area?  I am living in Royal Oak MI.  I have only worked for Usui since December.  I was with Siemens VDO (formally VDO, formally Philips Automotive Electronics) for 7+ years, calling on Ford and other Automotive companies.  In the '80's I was a manufacturers' rep. and represented a Japanese company.  I went to Japan twice ('89 & 90) and enjoyed myself each time.  Usui is a privately held company that makes tubing, rails as well as cooling fans and clutches.  I will be going over there within the next year.  They are located near Mount Fugi, while the other company was located near Sendai.  I spent a couple of weekends in Tokyo.

My wife, Marianne, is a Commercial Real Estate agent, but has found time to publish 3 romance novels.  She was in New York in 1994 for a writers convention and was part of the stand-by audience for David Letterman.  That night he had them walk on stage and then out to a bus where they circled the block for the rest of the show. (it was funny, trust me)  My son, Dan turned 20 today and will be a Junior at Western Michigan in ME.  Dan made to the state  Track finals 2 years in row for the 1600 as well as his Senior year in CC and the 800.  He made the WMU CC team, but got hurt.  He started running when he was nearly 9 years old as I was just starting to train for my first marathon.  I have run 13 in all and have been the Elite Coordinator for the Detroit marathon since 2001.  My daughter Bethany is a freshman in high school and actually had straight A's during a marking period. (An investigation should have followed)  She is a good soccer goalie and she is taking advanced German.

My mom died in an automobile accident in August 1984 when a car driven by Win Moses' brother that was weaving in and out of traffic struck her car.  Of course he was not charged with anything.  Ironically, my wife was on Letterman 10 years to the day of the accident.  You may have remembered my Dad from 4-H.  He passed away one year ago today.  Both my son, Dan and my niece shared have birthdays today, so it is funny how things work out.  Susan Small's dad worked with my dad at WOWO and we knew each other in pre-school.

My sister Mary is married to John Hilger and they own the market, restaurant and picnic facility on Us 30 and Butt Rd.  They might be rather reasonable in regards to price for the reunion.  If you are serious, I think you will need to network with Bob Mutton and others that still live in the Fort Wayne area as well as others that are linked up to classmates. I am amazed at the ability of search engines and you may be able to locate people that way.  I still have the book from the 15 year reunion that might help locate people, especially females that have married names.  Also check with the school and the Fort Wayne newspapers and ask for their help in publicizing a call for help.  I'll try to add the few names and email addresses that I have.

Hope this helps.  Have fun in Japan.  Don't throw a ligament...or two.  Judo is a great sport and keeps you in shape.  So is running marathons, but I am totally inflexible...but I last longer.
