Judo is a grappling art that was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro
Kano, an educator and martial artist in Japan. As a practitioner
of jujitsu, Kano sought a martial art that could be used to
teach discipline, self-defense, and as a physical education be
practiced safely with a partner. He analyzed the techniques of
jujitsu and selected the throws, pins, and submission holds that
would not cause injury. These techniques became judo, along with
the underlying principles: |

Seiryoku Zen'ryo |

Maximum Efficency with Minimum Effort |
|
|
Jita kyoei |
- |
Mutual Welfare and Benefit |
|
|
Jika no kansei |
- |
Strive for personal perfection |

Through these principles judo grew to become one of the most
widely practiced martial arts/sports in the world, and in 1964
was introduced as an Olympic sport. |
